KIGAM in Canada-Korea Conference in Science & Technology

Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources (KIGAM, President Dr. Bok Chul Kim) participated the Canada-Korea Conference in Science & Technology, as well known as ‘CKC’, which was organized by Association of Korean-Canadian Scientists and Engineers (AKCSE) from June 17th to 21st in Banff, Canada. The CKC roles are making possible for collaborating together for science and technology in various fields between Canada and Korea since 2010.

In this year, KIGAM hosted the 5th KIGAM-GSC Joint Workshop on Technical Program For Korea-Canada Joint Research Collaboration on Unconventional Gas Playswith Geological Survey of Canada (GCS) on June 18th as one of the main key programs at the CKC.

During the Joint Conference, KIGAM and GSC talked about the latest developments on “Characterization and Assessment Methods for Shale Gas Plays in Canada”. KIGAM's good research partnerships with GSC began in 1994. Since then, the both parties have continued collaborative research projects together on common interested areas. There are many important developments.

One of remarkable key research progresses between Canada and Korea is the shale gas research. Over the last decade, Korea and Canada have paid a great attention to the shale gas research. As much as the world seeks alternative energy resources, the emerging needs for the unconventional energy tremendously increased. This workshop gave the chances to enhance research improvements for unconventional energy resources.

Furthermore, KIGAM was leading in CCUS R&D co-joint conference. The scientists were in agreements that as our daily lives are becoming easier and convenient, immense amount of carbon dioxide is inevitably accumulating. As a result, the daily conveniences threat the green environment of the Earth. Climate Change is globally emerging issue which should be dealt with immediately because there is no generation of human history has faced these kinds of natural hazards and disasters. As one of the solutions, researchers discuseed KIGAM’s ‘Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS)’ technology can be one of the effective and practical technologies.

Finally, National Research Council of Science & Technology (NST) arranged the session for explaining the affiliated organizations major R&D agendas. KIGAM presented the future research plans, and many Canadian researchers showed interests.
